Hat
Yai
The
city of Hat Yai, 28 kilometres from
the city of Songkhla, is the gateway to the neighbouring
countries of Malaysia and Singapore. It is only 60 kilometres
from the port of entry at Sadao. Hat Yai has grown significantly
into the commercial, transportation, communication,
educational, and tourism centre of the south. Tourists can
obtain various goods from fresh produce to consumer
products such as electrical appliances. Niphat Uthit 1, 2,
or 3 Road is the major commercial centre. Threr are several
shopping Centre, Sanehanuson, Hat Yai Plaza Shopping
Centre, and Si Kimyong Market on Phetkasem Road

Hat Yai Municipal Park,
on Kanchanawanit Road, is 6 kilometres from the
city centre on the Hat Yai-Songkhla highway. It is the
major recreation for the people of Hat Yai and surrounding
areas as well. The park is full of beautiful flowering plants,
with a pavilion in the middle of the pond, avarium,
and food stalls. At the foot of the hill near the Brahman
shrine at the hilltop. And at the southern foothill
near the body scout camp stands the jade statue of Guan-yin,
the Chinese Goddess.
Wat Hat Yai Nai, on Phetkasem Road,
near Khlong U Taphao Bridge, is the site of a large reclining
Buddha measuring 35 metres long, 15 metres tall, and
10 metres wide, named Phra Phuttha Hattha Mongkhon, believed
to the third largest reclining Buddha in the world
- revered by both Thai and foreign tourists.
Namtok Ton Nga Chang is located in
the Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary. It is one of the beautiful
waterfalls of the south, about 26 kilometres from
the city. Follow the Hat Yai-Rattaphum road for 13 kilometres,
then turn left at Ban Hu Rae for another 13 kilometres.
This waterfall has seven levels, the third level is the
most beautiful and is named after the waterfall. At the
third level the stream separates into two, resembling
the elephants tusks. Treks have been provided for more adventurous
tourists. One can hire the motorised tricycle (tuk-tuk)
to the waterfall for two to three hours at 300-400 baht,
or one can take the minibus from the fresh maket (Talat
Sot Thet Sa Ban Hat Yai).

Chiang
Rai province covers some 11,678 square kilometres, is bordered
by Myanmar to the north and northeast. The provincial
capital is 785 kilometres north of Bangkok and is 580
metres above sea level.
Chiang
Rai was founded in 1262 by King Meng Rai and was the first
capital of Lanna Thai (Kingdom of a Million Ricefields).
The province contains Thailand's northernmost point at Mae
Sai, is well known for its crisp mountain scenery, and hilltribes,
and falls within the region know as the Golden Triangle,
the area where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos
converge.
City Attractions
King Meng Rai the Great Monument
This
is located on the city outskirts, beside the northern road
to Mae Chan, and honours the monarch who founded Chiang
Rai in 1262.
Ku Phra Chao Meng Rai
Situated in Wat Ngam Muang,
on Ngam Muang Hillock, this stupa contains King Meng Rai's
ashes and relics.
Mae
Kok River
Known
in Thai as Maenam Kok, this scenic 130-kilometre
long waterway runs through the heart of Chiang Rai.
The river is a major transportation artery from neighbouring
Chiang Mai province, especially the town of Tha Thon
(180 kilometres north of Chiang Mai provincial capital),
from whence long-tailed boats make the 3-4 hour journey
every day at 12.30 PM (Chiang Rai-Tha Thon: 10.30
AM). The river passes several hilltribe settlements and
elephant camps from where jungle treks originate.

AMPHOE MAE CHAN
Hot Spa
Located 8 kilometres from Mae Chan,
along the Mae Chan-Mai Ai Road, this complex has hot mineral water
and bath-house facilities. Accommodation is also available.
Hilltribe Development & Welfare Centre
15 kilometres along the route to Doi
Mae Salong, the centre aids and administers local hilltribe settlements.
Hilltribe handicrafts, including woven cloth and silverware,
are on sale. KING
AMPHOE MAE FAH LUANG
Doi Mae Salong
Located some 40 kilometres beyond
Mae Chan, a mountaintopsettlement known as Santi Khiri is home to
descendants of Chinese Nationalist soldiers who fled to, and
settled in Thailand in 1940. Mountainside plantations of coffee,
and fruit orchards, provide scenic variety. The area is particularly
picturesque in December and January when Thai cherry trees are in
blossom. Accommodation, restaurants and opportunities for
horse-riding and elephant trekking number among major attractions.
Doi Tung
This northernmost Thai mountain contains
several scenic spots, including the Doi Tung Royal Villa, the Mae
Fah Luang Botanical Garden, the mountaintop Wat Phrathat Doi
Tung which affords a spectacular view of the surrounding area, and
contains Buddha relics, and various hilltribe villages in
natural settings.
